How to play pro basketball in Australia
The NBL, the WNBL and NBL1 are three different ways to get paid to play in Australia. This page is the ladder, the import rules we can cite, the 2026-27 calendar, the salary figures the NBL has actually published, and how a club is supposed to see you. It is for players outside Australia, including college players. It is not a tryout, and it is not a placement service.
The ladder, from the national leagues down
Start with the league that matches your film, not the one on television.
- NBL (men). The national league. Ten clubs. The league's April 2026 free-agency note caps a roster at three imports and 11 contracted players. Our entry-friendliness estimate is 2/5. This is a job for players who already have a pro body of work, or for the separate Next Stars program below. It is a poor bet as a first contract out of college.
- WNBL (women). The women's national league. The league's 1 April 2026 free-agency note says nine teams were building WNBL27 rosters, and that a club can roster 10 players including up to two restricted players. Entry-friendliness on our index: 2/5.
- NBL1 (men and women). Semi-pro, in five conferences: South, East, North, Central and West. NBL1 Women is the women's side of the same conferences. Entry-friendliness on the men's conferences in our index is 3/5. This is the level where a college player is more often a realistic import.
- State leagues under NBL1. Big V in Victoria publishes a restricted-player rule. Queensland State League and WABL in Western Australia are on the index with little or no import or pay data. A blank on those pages means we have not sourced a figure. It does not mean the league is open.
Each of those has its own page in the league explorer, with the source next to the rule. The rules index puts the same leagues side by side, including NBL rules and WNBL rules. The wider first-contract map, if Australia is one option among many, is where to get your first pro contract.
Import rules you can check
NBL: three imports, and the word is the club's to apply
On 14 April 2026 the NBL wrote that free agency for NBL27 would open on Friday 17 April at 9am AEST, and that clubs "can still have a maximum of three imports next season, with 11 contracted players per roster." Next Stars do not count toward those 11. NBL27 free agency
That note does not define import. It does not say "non-Australian," and it does not say what a New Zealand passport does to the count. A later NBL article on spending describes a separate cap-room rule: a combined total of four imports and marquees on a roster, with only part of a marquee salary counting against the cap. How clubs use the cap
Read those as two published sentences, not as a full rulebook. The Salary and Contracting Rules themselves are not posted as a public PDF on the pages above. Before you fly, ask the club, in writing, whether you count as an import and whether a marquee tag changes the number. A second passport is not a strategy until the club says it changes your slot. What a passport does and does not do is path via passport.
Next Stars is a league program, not an open tryout. The NBL's Next Stars site describes an expression-of-interest process with the player, the agent and the family, then a note to clubs. It says Next Stars salaries sit outside the salary cap and that the league is involved in the contract so the club choice is a basketball decision. How the NBL finds a Next Star
The 2026 free-agency note only adds that Next Stars do not count toward the 11 contracted players. It does not say they are free of the three-import maximum. An older Q&A on the NBL's site quoted a first-season maximum. We are not repeating that dollar figure. It is not the 2026-27 rule. If someone sells a Next Stars spot, or a fee to "submit you to the NBL," that is not this program. Check the person on FIBA's agent directory before you send film.
WNBL: two restricted players, defined as non-Australian or New Zealand
The WNBL's free-agency note of 1 April 2026 is more explicit than the NBL's. Clubs can have 10 rostered players, including up to two restricted players. The note defines a restricted player as non-Australian/New Zealand talent. Development players are separate: a non-restricted Australian or New Zealand player under 25, and the note says a club may sign an unlimited number of them to a development squad. WNBL27 free agency
Nine teams were in that free agency. The schedule announcement names the Tasmania Jewels as a new franchise for this season. WNBL27 schedule
We do not have a WNBL salary cap or a minimum wage from the league. The women's salary table on this site does not invent one either. See women's salaries for the leagues where a source exists.
NBL1: each conference writes its own restricted-player rule
There is no single NBL1 import cap. Two conferences have published rules we can quote. The other three are on the index without a sourced cap. Do not copy Central's number onto South, East or North.
NBL1 Central (Basketball SA, 2026 rules of operation). A club cannot have more than two restricted players registered for a team at any time. A restricted player is a Category 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 player before any points dispensation, excluding a FIBA Oceania citizen. Category 1, worth 12 points, is a player who is not a citizen of a FIBA Oceania member, is not an Australian permanent resident, and needs a FIBA foreign-player licence. A team also has a points cap that depends on squad size (34 points for 12 players, up to 42 for 20). Two Category 1 players are 24 points before anyone else is listed. An injury waiver can take one restricted player off the count of two. The waiver needs a medical certificate and the league manager's approval. NBL1 Central rules (PDF)
NBL1 West (Basketball WA rules of operation, version 6.1, approved 21 November 2025). A team may roster at most three active restricted players, and at most two active Category A players. Category A is 8 points. The ordinary points ceiling is 19. For 2026 only, every team was given the WA-Talent Credit, which raises that ceiling to 22. The player-count limits still apply. Category A includes a player who is not a citizen of a FIBA Asia or Oceania country and is not an Australian permanent resident or a refugee. It also includes some players, Australians included, who played in the NBA, EuroLeague or WNBA in the windows the rule names. Getting Australian citizenship does not erase the NBA, EuroLeague or WNBA limb of that rule. NBL1 West rules (PDF)
South, East and North need their own conference rules. We have not put a number on them. Big V's 2026 rules, linked from that league page, allow a Senior Championship team up to three restricted players and no more than two from Category A (born outside Asia/Oceania and not an Australian or New Zealand citizen or resident). Other senior Big V divisions are capped at two restricted players.
A New Zealand passport is not automatically an Australian roster spot. Central's rules say a New Zealand citizen who lives in Australia is classified by basketball experience, and that a player cannot be on an NBL1 Central squad list while registered in the New Zealand national league. West's Category A test is about FIBA Asia/Oceania citizenship and Australian residence, which is a different sentence. Ask the conference, not a group chat.
What the leagues pay
The only salary table the NBL has published for NBL27 is a team table. It is in Australian dollars. It is not an import price list.
| NBL27 figure | Amount (AUD) | What the league's page says it is |
|---|---|---|
| Salary cap | A$2,167,358.92 | The team cap in the Salary and Contracting Rules. The page calls it a 7% increase. |
| Salary floor | A$1,950,642.53 | The minimum each team must spend. |
| Minimum salary | A$88,754.76 | Printed as "next year minimum" on the 15 April 2026 page. The same table prints a current minimum of A$82,948.37, and the article text says the minimum "is almost $83,000." |
| Marquee 1–4 | A$267,560.09 to A$535,121.73 | The four marquee amounts on that table. These are cap figures, not a promise of what a player is paid in total. |
Source: NBL.com.au, 15 April 2026. The announcement says the rise covers all 10 clubs. Nothing in the table is a US dollar figure. Nothing in it is a typical import salary.
We are not filling the gap with a guessed import range. A reported range from a placement company is stored, and labelled as not official, on the NBL league page and in the salary table. Use it only with that label. It is not repeated here as a league fact. First-year salaries is the page for entry-level ranges in other countries, which are a different market from this cap.
NBL1, the WNBL, Big V and the Queensland State League do not have a wage in the documents cited on this page. Our league pages mark NBL1 pay as an estimate ("semi-pro; housing, a car and a modest wage or a job" is the editorial line, not a surveyed median). Do not budget a season on that sentence. The number that matters is the one in the contract: currency, gross or net, pay dates, and whether housing is included. That checklist is the contract guide. What you spend before anyone offers, including a flight you should keep refundable, is what it costs to play overseas.
Our index tags housing as "usually" included on the NBL and the NBL1 conferences. That tag is an editorial estimate. It is not a clause in the salary rules. An apartment, a car and a flight home are negotiated. If they are not in the contract, they are not in the deal.
Season calendar
Australia runs two seasons that barely share a month. Plan the one you can actually arrive for.
| Competition | Published window | Source |
|---|---|---|
| NBL (men) | Regular season opened Saturday 19 September 2026. 165 games, 21 rounds, ten clubs. The fixture list on the English Wikipedia season page runs through 14 February 2027. The league's schedule announcement does not print that end date. | NBL schedule · Wikipedia fixture list |
| WNBL (women) | Opens Thursday 15 October 2026. 109 games. The league said the playoffs will use five teams and an elimination final. The announcement does not print the last regular-season date. | WNBL schedule |
| NBL1 | 2026 conference openers: Central 21 March, West 26 March, South 27 March, East 28 March, North 17 April. The tip-off article does not list finals dates, and it does not list 2027 dates. | NBL1 tip-off dates |
| NBL free agency | NBL27 free agency opened 17 April 2026 at 9am AEST. That window built the season that is underway now. | NBL free agency |
A European winter that runs from about October into May overlaps NBL1, which has already started by late March. It lines up better with the NBL, whose regular season sits inside the northern winter. The one-line note on the first-contract guide that treats NBL1 as a season you add after Europe is only roughly right, and only if you can leave Europe before those March and April openers. The NBL's April free agency is the moment clubs were allowed to sign other clubs' players for the following spring. A letter in October is a replacement conversation, if a club has an open import spot. It is not the start of free agency.
The tryouts and camps calendar does not list an official NBL or NBL1 open tryout. If a camp sells "NBL exposure," read when a tryout helps and the legit checklist before you pay. The league's own Next Stars path, described above, is not a camp fee.
The visa, after a real offer
Paid basketball in Australia is work. Home Affairs describes the Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408) as short-term temporary work, with a sporting-activities stream, and it describes an approved temporary activities sponsor as someone it has assessed as suitable to sponsor a subclass 408 applicant. The full sequence, and the reason we do not copy the fee or the processing-time guide, is the visa guide. Sporting activities stream · Becoming a sponsor · Subclass 408
- The club files. You need an offer a government can attach to an employer or a sponsor. There is no honest way to hold the visa first and shop it to clubs.
- A tourist stay is not the season. Do not enter as a visitor and start practice. The same red flag is on the visa guide.
- Do not wire a "visa fee" to a person. Any government charge goes through the channel Home Affairs names. An agent who invoices you for the visa, before or instead of a contract, is the problem described in agent fees.
- The Breakers are not an Australian employer. They are one of the NBL's ten clubs. The fixture list shows their home games in Auckland, so an Australian subclass 408 does not authorise that job. Ask that club which country's permit they file. Fixture list
- New Zealand citizens are a different case from a US or European passport, both in the WNBL's "non AU/NZ" definition and at the border. This page does not restate New Zealand immigration rules. Use the official page the club sends you.
A FIBA Letter of Clearance is the basketball transfer document. It is not the visa. If you are already licensed to a federation, the letter is part of the move. If you have never been licensed, the letter-of-clearance guide says when you do not need one.
How to get seen
Clubs fill the spots above with film and a contract, not with a form on this website. The order that matches the calendar:
- Pick the tier your last season supports. Three NBL imports on a capped roster is not a general tryout. NBL1 and Big V are where a first overseas contract in Australia usually sits. If you are earlier than any offer, playing overseas after college is the wider page. Best countries is the comparison if Australia is only one idea.
- Send the film package this site already describes. A short reel plus full games, in the form the highlight-reel guide sets, and a one-page player résumé with your real passport, your height in both units, and links that open with no login. Do not write "NBL ready" on the sheet. Write the league you played.
- Use an agent who can name an Australian club, or write to the club yourself. How to get an agent is the process. The agent directory is the list we built from public registers. Check the licence on FIBA's directory before the name goes on your résumé. We do not have a separate Basketball Australia agent register to add. For NBL1, our league pages note that clubs also recruit directly. That note is ours, not a published open-tryout policy. A short email to a coach, with the résumé linked, is the direct version. Write before the conference opener, not in May.
- Time it off the dates above. NBL free agency for the season now being played opened on 17 April 2026. NBL1's 2026 conferences opened from 21 March. For the following year, assume clubs are deciding in the Australian summer, and wait for the league to post the date rather than inventing one. The free Pro Pathway Starter Kit is the short PDF (chapters 1–2, the league hierarchy, and the agent directory) if you want the wider map in one file.
- Read the offer before you book the flight. Australian dollars, what "minimum salary" does and does not promise, housing, tax, the exit, and who files the visa. Contract checklist → Keep the ticket refundable until the club confirms you can enter to work.
What to ignore
- A guaranteed NBL contract, a guaranteed import spot, or a camp that claims the league will attend because you paid.
- A salary quote that is not in Australian dollars, or a quote that pretends the team cap is your salary. The cap is A$2,167,358.92 for the roster, not for you.
- Anyone who says every NBL1 conference allows two imports. Central says two restricted players. West says three active restricted players and two Category A. The others are unpublished here.
- A visa arranged before the offer, or a passport scan sent to a new contact. The visa guide is the line on that.
- An agent fee paid upfront to be "submitted to Australia." Once a real playing contract exists, the cap on agent pay is in agent fees. It is not a listing fee.
FAQ
How do you play pro basketball in Australia?
There are three different jobs. The NBL (men) and the WNBL (women) are the national leagues: short rosters, a handful of import spots, and contracts negotiated in the autumn free-agency window. NBL1 is the semi-pro tier under them, split into five state conferences that tip off in the Australian autumn. Below that are state leagues such as Big V in Victoria. A college player is usually aiming at NBL1 or a state league, not at one of the NBL's three import spots. Nobody on this page can get you a trial the league does not run.
How many imports can an NBL team sign?
The NBL's own free-agency note for the 2026-27 season says each club can have a maximum of three imports, on a roster of 11 contracted players. Next Stars do not count toward those 11. That note does not define the word import. The same league site says a club can have a combined total of four imports and marquees. Confirm with the club who counts against the three before you treat a second passport as a free spot.
What is the difference between the NBL and NBL1?
The NBL is the men's national league: ten clubs, a published salary cap, and a season that opened on 19 September 2026. NBL1 is a separate semi-pro competition with five conferences (South, North, Central, West and East) whose 2026 seasons started between 21 March and 17 April. NBL1 does not use the NBL salary cap, and its restricted-player rules are written by each conference, not by the NBL.
How much do NBL players make?
The NBL published team figures for 2026-27, in Australian dollars, not US dollars: a salary cap of A$2,167,358.92, a salary floor of A$1,950,642.53, and a minimum salary listed on that page as A$88,754.76 for the next year beside a current minimum of A$82,948.37. Those are roster rules. They are not a typical import offer. The league has not published an import salary band, and this page does not invent one. NBL1 has no league-wide wage in the rules we cite.
When is basketball season in Australia?
The NBL27 regular season opened on 19 September 2026 (165 games, 21 rounds). The fixture list reproduced on the English Wikipedia season page runs through 14 February 2027. The WNBL27 schedule opens on 15 October 2026 (109 games). NBL1 is the other half of the year: in 2026 the five conferences started between 21 March and 17 April. A European season that runs into May overlaps NBL1. It does not overlap the NBL regular season the same way.
Do I need a visa to play basketball in Australia?
If you are not an Australian or New Zealand citizen, paid basketball is work. Home Affairs publishes a Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408) with a sporting-activities stream, and an approved temporary activities sponsor has to be on the file. The club is the usual sponsor. A tourist stay is not that visa. The New Zealand Breakers are an NBL club that plays at home in New Zealand, so an Australian visa does not cover that contract. This is not legal advice. The steps we can cite are on the visa guide.
Can a college player get an NBL1 contract?
Clubs in NBL1 do sign players from outside Australia. The spots are restricted-player spots, and the cap is not the same in every conference. NBL1 Central's 2026 rules allow no more than two restricted players registered for a team at a time. NBL1 West's rules allow at most three active restricted players, and at most two of them in Category A. There is no published league salary. Send film and a one-page résumé to the club or to an agent you have checked. Do not pay someone who promises the spot.
